Apple claims that iMessages are end-to-end encrypted, which would make it hard to turn over anything to the NSA. However, iCloud backups don't have end-to-end encryption, and most people have their messages in there. That and their compliance to the NSA's requests make it an insecure service (but a little less insecure than Google's and Facebook's).
